Money was in vented to be able to have transactions for goods and services between people.  The more you have the more you can buy.  Eventually you purchase everything you need to survive and then you start storing your money (saving).
How much does a person need to live if they have everything.....This all depends on how extravagant they want to live.  Some people are satisfied with the basics and others need to have extravagances.  Satisfaction levels vary from person to person.  It is good to be satisfied with the basics because there are times when the economy is in a poor state and you might not be able to live the high life for long.  If you are hungry bean soup will satisfy you just the same as a beef wellington.
Money plays a big role between wants and needs.  There is a big different between "I want to eat" and "I need to eat".   If we pay more attention to our needs and not our wants, the need for money would be smaller.
